Default FMO - Shogren Performance Marine Charity run to Useppa Island, Sat March 3 / 12

Our fun run to Useppa Island will take place on Saturday March 3rd. You may read about Useppa Island by clicking on this link:http://www.useppa.com/indexb.html
The event sponsor is Shogren Performance Marine and we thank Scott and well as our other sponsors for their support. This event is one of two fund raisers we have each year to help finance our Ft. Myers Offshore, Inc. student scholarship program. If you are planning on attending this event please let me know by Wednesday Feb. 29th as Useppa Island must order our food in advance. You can confirm your attendance by phone - 239-776-0481, e mail - [email protected] or by posting on the event thread on Offshoreonly.com
Attending Captains should read this information carefully to minimize any confusion.
As in past fund raising events, there will be an entry fee of $100.00 per boat. The preferred method of payment is a check made out to FMO, Inc. or alternatively cash. Payment will be collected at the lunch stop.
Each Captain will receive a set of poker cards and an opportunity to win up to $500.00. Please see details below under the Blackjack Poker heading. As well, our fund raising efforts will involve an additional Blackjack poker game open to everyone and we will again be selling our FMO tee shirts and hats.
Come out and have a great day on the water with your friends at FMO and lets show our ongoing support for worthy students entering university / college or other institute of higher learning in Lee and Collier Counties. ( Please read our mission statement http://www.ftmyersoffshore.org ) We were able to award 8 scholarships last year and with your help, hope to improve upon that this year.

Membership Renewal:

If you have not yet joined or renewed your membership for 2012, you may do so on our website and pay using Pay Pal, join / renew at the lunch stop or alternatively download the form and mail it in. There is no change in membership fees. Your membership will be good through until the end of 2012. Go to www.ftmyersoffshore.org If you are a current member we will only need basic information as it is already on file unless there have been changes. People tell me all the time what a great thing FMO has going on here and it can only continue if you continue to show your support for your club.

Route:

Our starting point will once again be the south side of the Sanibel Bridge. Boats should assemble around 10:45 am and we will leave by 11:00 AM sharp. I will leave Marco Island at 10 AM to head up to meet the main group of boats at the Sanibel Bridge for the 11:00 AM start. Any boats from Marco or Naples wanting to travel with me to the Bridge, should let me know.

We will be in two groups, according to speed. Group 2 will be those boats capable of cruising at 50 - 55 MPH and will be the first to start at 11:00 AM, travelling up the Intra Coastal Waterway (ICW) . As before, there will be a designated pace boat for this group that will lead the boats past the Sanibel pier, under the westerly span of the causeway and up the ICW to Useppa Island. This route is 10 miles shorter than the offshore route that group 1 will be taking. Also please be aware that the ICW can be busy and we need to respect others using the waterway.

Group 1 will be boats capable of cruising at more than 60 MPH and will start a few minutes after Group 2 has left. I will serve as the pace boat for this group. When we start our run we will go past the Sanibel pier so Jay can get our picture before heading south making a wide sweep around the bottom end of Sanibel Island ( do not cut the corner as this part of San Carlos Bay is shallow), eventually going west into the Gulf and then up the coast staying a couple of miles or more offshore. We will make our way off the Gulf via Boca Grande Pass. Also remember to not cut this corner either, staying outside the Johnson Shoals. Once back in the ICW, we will then head south the approximate 3 miles to Useppa Island. If the seas are too rough, then the alternate route will be to run up the ICW along with Group 2.

After lunch, you have the option of choosing one of three ways home. Offshore, ICW or an interesting ride back thru Matlacha which this group has done twice before. I will lead the Matlacha group as we swing around the top end of Pine Island and head back south in the channel between Pine Island and the mainland through Matlacha. Many have never travelled this route before and it is not difficult when following someone who knows the local waters with all it's twists and turns. It's another interesting and fun run and with it being high tide, can be done safely.

Fuel / Distance:

From the Sanibel Bridge to Useppa Island and back should be about 65 - 70 miles by way of the ICW both ways and about 10 miles longer if running offshore. South Seas Resort which is in the ICW along the way has 89 octane fuel. 93 octane is very difficult to find these days so please leave with a full tank.

Lunch:

We will be eating at the Tarpon Bar at the Useppa Island Club. Last years menu was great so we will again be having their "Deli Board" which has lots of variety for $24.00 which includes tax and gratuity.

After lunch: A number of members have indicated a desire to get together for a social hour after lunch and for those interested we will be going to The Big Game Club next to Parrot Key in Ft Myers Beach. This is not part of the organized event but all are welcome.

Blackjack Poker:

FMO board member Joe Rutter has again agreed to organize a couple of Blackjack poker games. One game will be restricted to the boat Captains only, so one or more of them will go home with all or some of the $500.00 Captain's prize money. Captains will be issued playing cards on payment of their $ 100.00 entry fee and can be paid by cash or check. There will be another game that will be open to ALL attendees at the lunch that are of age. Cards in that game will be $25.00 per hand. Half of the sales will become prize money and the other half will go towards FMO's student scholarship program. Joe will establish a set of rules that will govern the poker games. We recieved very positive feedback from the past Blackjack events with most people finding it a lot of fun and enjoying it.

Communication:

Inter boat communication to be on VHF channel 72. My cell number is 239 776 0481. Anyone dropping out after the start should let me know so we do not spend time either waiting or looking for you. Leave a voicemail if no answer.

Pictures:

Club photographer Jay Nichols ( OSO Jayboat ) will be positioned on the pier on the south end on Sanibel Island ( ICW side ) and will capture your boat as we pass about a quarter mile off the pier. Jay will join us at Useepa for lunch. Anyone wishing to purchase prints from Jay may contact him at:cell is 941 276 5650 or e mail: [email protected]
As always after each run, Jay will post his pictures up on OSO and I will provide links so you can view them.

Here are the charts from last years Useppa run. REMEMBER the starting detour past the Sanibel pier for Jay to photograph us, as we pass by.
