True fact JC, they don't. I guess I should feel lucky with my blown 454 700hp. I got 250hrs on a 97 Bravo and 100+ on my XR and still going strong. 26' cat around 3800#'s I'll put the 05 XR to the test.
So 598ci is the hot ticket? Probably costs almost the same as a 572? Best heads? Dart Pro1?

Pro 1 darts.AFR 357s,Brodix.They all make within 5 to10 horsepower of each other.Dart or Brodix manifolds seem to be the best.572 or 598 is the same price to build.

Either. Need 4 3/4" crank for the 600+" stuff. Prices have really come down on that stuff since I built a 632" 5yrs ago. (4.75 X 4.60") It made 900HP @6400 @820 ft/# @5000. Dart 360 heads, dart tunnel ram 2X775 demon carbs and BIG SOLID ROLLER. A 622 makes a lot of sense, it'll save a lot of cylinder wall. Should make 800HP all day with single dominator and a hydralic roller from "the bottom of the page" :D  If you go with solid roller PM me and I'll give you a combo that will work. :drink:

Excuse my ignorance, but I think this is the right place to ask.
What kind of reliability are these engines going to offer, assuming they are normally aspirated? For a guy who knows next to nothing about engines and has had outboards all his life is it better to stick to stock Merc power? Is stock Merc power more expensive? Let's say we are talking about anything from 400-750 HP. This question includes the drive, in fact, it includes the entire package. If I'm looking for this kind of HP and want to be able to go out every weekend without tinkering all the time, with some basic maintenance what's the best thing to do?

On my 598 I am at 10:1 compression with Dart 355 CNC Pro 1's and a match ported Dart single plane intake. Cam is a solid roller 264/270 duration @.050" on a 114 LSA installed on a 112. Lift is .740. Never dynoed motor. It makes decent power and idles well.

I'm curious about how many hours people get on these also, but it won't hold me back either way. I will go with a hydrolic roller cam for sure and single manifold, I think.
RTAYLOR, yes thier less expensive than Mercs motors. You'll also have a bigger pkg to start with. ProCharge a 598ci and you'll easily have 1100+ hp at low boost.

I plan on changing springs and lifters every 50 or so hrs. You won't have that maintenance using a hydraulic roller. As for the bottom end I will probably tear down and inspect at 200 hrs. For me that will be 4 - 5 seasons.

There is a 29 Warlock in MD with something like 700 N/A cubes. The damn thing idles at 9mph. While some us can nicely glide into the dock, he REALLY has to be careful, and usually has to reverse to stop.
