1972 18' Sutphen Gran Sport. Only one on the west coast? SBC AQ311 Volvo/ Penta with hi-rise exhaust. Give or take 320hp. 65 mph.

There are actually a lot of differences in the hull and deck. Not very many were produced. I have been around them since 1995. I know them inside and out. I just don't know if they can handle a big block!

I'd be concerned with the torque of a big block causing the boat to lean excessivly. Heard of a 22' Donzi with a 502 that did this. Not a direct comparison, but it may help.

If the 22 did this, there were other issues besides the BB... Prop being the first suspect.... Fat chick in the passenger seat the second :D :D

I'm not a BB 18 fan.. Too much stern weight, and the speeds are no better than a SB really... Coolness factor is way high tho :drink:

This is my Donzi 1981 18 2+3 with TRS drive and 454. I have never GPS'd it but I know it needs a LOT more prop then it has and it already runs faster then a 2003 18 with 350mpi in it.

Another 18' Donzi checking in...

1970 18 2+3 351W Holman-Moody w/ Volvo AQ250 drive and 23" Ultra prop. Best I've seen is around 55mph, but it's a BLAST! I don't get to drive it much, can't get Janet out of the drivers seat!!

I agree, coolness factor is through the roof! :D

I know the boat can handle the speed and power, but I don't know how the weight will affect the ride. It handles the rough VERY well now, I don't want to give that up. And there is really no way of knowing how it will handle the weight until you try. I was going to place some bags of cement in the bilge but that will really only tell you how it will handle at current speeds, not the faster speeds you will be gaining.

My new small block will be here today and I am sitting here second guessing myself!

I've got a 88 Baja 196 Sport.

J,

She should run 70 - 72ish all day long.. Torque will be a factor, tabs may be needed... Still a very cool boat, and yes, I still have your HIN, i'll send that info to ya one day :)
