Hard drive on laptop locked up and I lost everything. Is there any hope for recovering the lost files?

Thats why you should have a USB hard disk to back up your stuff.

it really stinks to loose everything :(

I had a hard drive crash 6 months ago. the Head crashed onto the plates which apparently is the worst kind of "crash" Estiamtes were starting prices of $900, could be as high as $2,400 depending on what was needed to retrieve. A portion of the data was guaranteed to be lost, but hopefully only a small amount of data missing.

If you find out something more affordable, please let me know.

If the heads crash on the platters that is not a good thing. Usually what then happens is when you power on the drive the heads then scrape across the platters in a sense "sanding off" the data. Does the drive make any noise when you boot up the laptop? If it doesn't then that may be a good thing. It may be electronic instead of mechanical. If the circuit board went bad on the hard drive you would have to find an identical good drive and swap the board to get the data off. Unfortunatley the hard drive manufacturers don't do this. I own a consulting company and we have done this countless times and it's a great feeling when you find a board and it works. If you can get to the hard drive and read the specs, I'd be happy to see if we have one you could have.
