My favorite pitch to the Save the Manatee Club is simple: In the last 12 years boating registrations and boat useage in Florida has absolutely SKYROCKETED, yet during THAT EXACT SAME TIME PERIOD, the Manatee population has increased by a minimum of over 300%. The SMC has yet to respond to that scientific fact.

you guys are ALL sick...
all members of this board should attend some wildlife conservation seminars...(seriously)
We DO respect wildlife. It's not the that we hate Manatees, it's how the STMC forced the State of Florida to create the protected zones. They used misinformation, lies, and propaganda to achieve their goals. They lied, cheated and threatened to sue the state if any scientific studies were performed. Most of the claims made by the STMC were proven to false so the state relaxed some of the restrictions.
There are many areas where the rich homeowners are using the STMC and the Manatee to keep boaters away from their communities and to limit or ban recreational access. Just like the rich who are fighting to enforce speed and noise limits on your area lakes. Picture if they succeeded and had all forms of power boating banned. Would you like it?

This what was on the $TMC website today!

Ask Governor Bush to Veto HB 989
and HB 759!
While the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act escaped a direct attack in the 2005 Florida Legislative Session, manatees will be directly impacted by several bills that were passed. Fortunately, with your help, we were able to strip some of the most egregious sections from these bills. However, we still need your help on two bills that we are asking Florida Governor Jeb Bush to veto.

What You Can Do:
Please support manatees and their habitat by sending an e-mail to Governor Bush. You can copy and paste the following text into your e-mail. Please use this subject line: Please Veto HB 989 AND HB 759 and make sure to include your name and mailing address.

E-mail Address: [email protected]

Dear Governor Bush:

Please veto HB 989 “Relating to Public Marinas/Boat Ramps” and HB 759 “Relating to Environmental Permitting." Both bills weaken environmental protection by decreasing much-needed local, state, and federal agency review. This puts manatees and manatee habitat at greater risk without the necessary protective measures or an increased on-the-water enforcement effort.

Thank you for ensuring that, while Florida’s human population grows and puts additional stresses on our finite natural systems, wildlife – including manatees – will continue to have wild places for their biological needs.

Sincerely,
Your Name
Your Address

Thank you for your help!

NO MORE NEW BOAT RAMPS IN FL is the underlying agenda here!

Angry Re: Florida, we don't want to feel your pain. Stop importing these things.. :)

This is what the $TMC wants for Ft. Myers/Naples/Lee county area!

State Stewardship Once Again Falls Short

Keep Lee County Federal Zones Intact

The Issue:
The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC) took final action on its Lee County manatee protection proposal at its April 14 meeting. Before the meeting, the proposed boat speed zones had already been watered down by FWCC staff in an attempt to appease boaters' rights groups. But the FWCC commissioners didn't stop there. They voted to weaken manatee protection even further at the request of these groups, and they directed their staff to request that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service weaken its Lee County boat speed zones.

The commission has agreed to revisit their decision in one area at their June meeting. But if they strengthen any of the new state boat speed zones, it is likely that extremist boaters will challenge them in court. This means manatees could be unprotected if federal protection, which is currently in place, is withdrawn.

What You Can Do:
Please help manatees by endorsing the following position letter. By adding your information below, you will be sending the letter to Sam Hamilton, Southeast Regional Director for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, asking the Service not to withdraw or weaken its Lee County boat speed zones. NOTE: All fields marked with * are required for your e-mail to be valid. As always, thank you for your support!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. Hamilton:

I appreciate that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service adopted permanent refuges in Lee County to replace the emergency zones that were in place there. I am asking the Service NOT to withdraw or weaken these permanent refuges.

As you know, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission recently adopted permanent manatee protection zones in Lee County, which for over a decade has been the deadliest county in Florida for manatee mortalities from boat collisions. So far in 2005, Lee County again leads the state in the number of manatees killed by boats. Further, the FWCC has determined that the southwest Florida manatee sub-population is almost certainly declining.

I am concerned because the commission rejected their own staff's science and unanimously adopted unacceptably weak manatee protection in some areas of Lee County, such as Matlacha Pass, Hendry Creek, and Hell Peckney Bay. Their rule doesn't even address areas that have been in need of additional protection for years: San Carlos Bay, Estero Bay, and the Bokeelia area. Less protection in Lee County, especially in the face of an exploding human population and increasing pressures on manatees and their habitat, is simply unacceptable.

To encourage your agency to withdraw existing federal protections in Lee County, the commission has agreed to revisit its adoption of weakened protection in Matlacha Pass at its June meeting. However, if the commission strengthens protection in Matlacha Pass, it is likely that extremist boaters will follow through on their very public threats to legally challenge the new state speed zones. This means manatees will be unprotected if federal protection is withdrawn. Given the inadequate speed zones the commission just adopted and the threat of a legal challenge, it is imperative that the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service NOT withdraw or weaken its Lee County boat speed zones.

I am counting on you to ensure that adequate protection measures are in place to protect the declining southwest Florida manatee sub-population as the FWCC has shown by its actions they are not willing to do so.

Sincerely,
