chances of getting the cig wet before winter are slim, so this weekend we purchased a 1984 19 checkmate eluder with a 1984 evinrude 235 outboard. i am not very familiar with outboards. what performance upgrades can be purchased for an engine like that? can teh exhaust leave the engine earlier instead of coming out of the prop thru the outdrive? i bought the boat for not much so im not lookin to spend a lot. looking for minor upgrades...flame arrestors, exhaust, intake etc. thanks in advance

why cant you use regular v6 marine headers and pipes jsut like if it were a stern drive?

You have to think TOTALLY different than a stern drive.
Try Scream and Fly.com for the o/b stuff.
Good luck, after a while they sound just as good as a Big Block. At least my Merc's do through the offshore exhausts.

Dont bother too much with upgrades. The hulls on those Checkmates are just not as fast as other boats of same design. Im not knocking Checkmate at all, they just arent as effeciant as a few other brands.

I own a 1988 21' with a 235 Yamaha and it only gets about 68 mph with all the toys on it. Enjoy what you have and dont waste the extra dough on a mile or two an hour

I had a pair of those. They ran great for year.

If you want to add some noise, you can drill a one inch exhaust releif hole on both sides of the lower unit, just above the cavitation plate.

Start with a 1/4 hole and make sure you hit the center of the exhaust area. Then go to about 1 inch. Nice sound as soon as it comes on plane. :D

why only a 1 inch hole? can u drill the hole higher up to produce the sound all the time? would drilling a hole for the exhaust effect the performance or propeller pitch?
otis:what prop model and pitch did you use?
the past owner said it ran 73 with a raker 16pitch , but changed to another prop for skiing

Round ear over the hub chopper worked best for mine.

As for the size of the hole, take a look. One inch is about all the space there is. I guess you could go higher into the exhaust plenum if you wanted.

Performance gain??? Tiny. You can't do much to OBs. Maybe reeds, that's about it. Unless you get fancy and redo the motor.

ive thought about changing the reeds wtih ones from www.land-and-sea.com do you hav any idea how much they cost or how mcuh hp is added approx?
