My Visit to Dick's Performance Marine:aka Mr Gadgets
Last fall I took the topcaps off of my XR's to find some things in there that I didn't really like......such as the the bearing in the cap had gotten torn up on both caps.
Bad news to say the least.
I gave Mr Gadgets(Dick Tryce) a call and he said bring them up to his shop this winter and he'll go thru them for me.
When December rolled around I called Dick and sure enough he had a slot open for me for in January.
When I arrived I pulled into his new shop to unload the drives.
Dick then proceeded to spend at least 3 hours tearing my drives down and showing me what part failures I had and also what was going to be done to them to beef them up.
The guy went into great depth to answer all questions that I had.
When I got back home I had an email waiting for me with a price quote.
I felt that the job was quoted at a fair price.
When possible bearings that weren't propitiatory to Merc were used greatly helping to lower parts cost.
If you have Bravo's that need attention Mr Gadgets shopp may be were you need to go.
Besides the he really likes to talk boats!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! Dennis and Deb showed up as planned and we did have fun looking the drives over!! Dennis is the first customer to show up after I had moved into the new shop. I am hoping to get some pics to show off my year and half of labor to get it to were it is. I still need to get a few touches done before I get any.. but I am making progress. Working on a new drive stand while waiting for parts for Dennis's drives. I have been working on software to make the process more professional and getting setup to increase efficiency while doing the actual work on the drives. I did enjoy Dennis and Deb's visit! I am happy that I could help him out. And Thank you for the mention.
Dyno and Check.. nice to hear from you guys too.. Now if the water would get soft, we could do some boating here in Mich.. Temp right now is 10*..
Thanks
Dick

Dick, what's up bub? I keep camping out by the phone, waiting for a call from you to meet up for dinner at 84 East. Tell some of these Bravo-busters that you need a Saturday night off.

Yep, rebuilt both of my lowers last yr. All were Timken. Bought many of them from AutoZone for approx $5 each set vs. Mercs $30+ /set. Just your standard wheel bearings. The ones not avalible at Autozone were bought from a bearing and seal supplier for the same cost. A little Merc mark up, eh?

Dave,
I keep thinking of that call I need to make.. again, let me see what I can do..
US1, I only use Timken tapered bearings in the drives, found that some of the others had different heights, caused a bit a problem with shimming..

NSK didn't seem right when I replied, but for life of me could think why. Just went back and rechecked my postings from last yr on my rebuild and Timkens was it. (My previous post is now corrected) I also measured the heights when replacing. All were right with in .0001 of the old ones. I was a happy camper. 1 yr of strong running and still together, so must have gotten all my setups right.

Re: My Visit to Dick's Performance Marine:aka Mr Gadgets
Finally had time off from work and made the trip back up to Holland Michigan to pick up my finished drives.
Upon inspection of the drives I found them to be clean and unscratched.
Dick also went into more detail about what was done to set them up and what was encountered when doing so.
All used parts were retained and boxed.
No hidden tricks either when it was time to pay the bill.
Dick's a stand up kind a guy and I would not hesitate to have him work on my drives again.
Besides it's worth the drive just to shoot the bull with him about boating on a cold Midwestern day
