The boat on the left is a Formula, the tri hull on the right is a Thunderbird....two different companies back in the days before they merged.

Nice!
That was back when you built a boat for a particular class.
No breakout speeds. No GPS. No Bracket Racing.
What happened??????

49 "A" Class boats!

The major advances in technology were not addressed in the rules;and as a result, many, many boats became uncompetitive in a short period of time and withdrew from racing. The demise of the A and B classes, led to the creation of the F1 and F2 classes....which were great for a few years, but ultimately became casualties of the same problems.
Hopefully, some things will develop in the off season to once again grow the open cockpit vee bottom classes;they are no doubt very popular and vital to the sport.
