Water Patrol divers raise a Catamaran Spectre involved in an accident June 17 near the 16-mile marker of the main channel. According to Water Patrol Sgt. Dave Wall "it appears that the boat was traveling at a high rate of speed" when it hit a wake that led to to the death of a 25-year-old Garland, Texas, man. Photo courtesy of the Water Patrol.

CAMDEN COUNTY - The driver of 36-foot Catamaran Spectre involved in a fatal boating accident earlier this summer has been cited for careless and imprudent operation of a vessel by the Missouri Water patrol.

If convicted of the misdemeanor charge, the driver, Carl Esrey, faces a fine of up to $500 and/or six months in jail. The ticket was issued following an investigation by the Water Patrol.

The accident occured on June 17 near the 16-mile marker of the main channel. Esrey and two passengers were headed toward Bagnell Dam when the 33-foot boat hit a wake. The boat became airborne, throwing 25-year-old Christopher Plummer of Garland, Tex., into the water. Plummer's body was recovered the next day by the Water Patrol between the 15 and 16-mile markers. The body was found using sonar in approximately 58-feet of water about 500 feet from the shoreline.

According to Water Patrol reports, Esrey tried to grab Plummer when he started to come out of his seat, but he was unable to get a grip on him. Esrey suffered moderate injuries. The second passenger was not injured.

Water Patrol Sgt. Dave Wall said according to statements from witnesses and information gathered through the course of the investigation "it appears that the boat was traveling at a high rate of speed" when it hit the wake. According to the Water Patrol, the 36-foot Catamaran is a high performance boat. This particular Catamaran had custom-built engines.

Witnesses said the boat came up out of the water with the bow pointing up and then slid back down into the water on the stern.

The last report I heard was that when the passenger was starting to go airborne the driver reached over and tried to grab in to keep him in the boat and left his hand on the wheel and 90 degreed the boat. When they passed me earlier in the day they were doing about 80mph.

Boat hooked by sponson running 90-100mph . Be real careful to speculate as there appeared to be mechanical failure to me, but it will all come out eventually. Wearing a lifeline in that boat must be a priority period.
