I'd suggest you get a "pre-survey" then correct eveyrhting that brings out and then go for documented formal survey. THat will maximuze valuation and document (in word writing) exactly what you have and real $$ value. Interview the surveyor before you hire him so you know his attitude and approach and choose the one that will work with you and meet the needs of your survey.

It's kind of like estate vs tax vs market appraisals in real estate. Each type of appraisal/survey is different depending on goal(s).

I got another one for you guys. A buddy of mine just had a boat totaled (long story) and when he did the claim they said "Here is the value on the boat" He says "Yeah but that's 4500 less than what is on my policy". They say "Well we lowered the value on it this year-there was a note in with your bill." So since his wife pays all the bills and had dutifully sent a check to the insurance company, they had accepted the new value. There was no actual note, just a changed value in the middle of the declaration page. Whenever you get a renewal or note from the insurance company-read carefully and completely-otherwise it could be costly :mad:
