The annual "What flatscreen TV.....?" post

After five years, I finally killed the 13" Quasar TV/VCR in my Formula 382 this weekend. Tough little bugger - even though it is more or less in two pieces it still works!

Anyway - It looks like I can fit a 15" LCD with side-mounted speakers. The Sharp Aquos LC-15B2UA ($400-$700) is 19" wide and 12" high, the Sharp LC-15B6U-S is about an inch wider at $414, and a Sanyo unit that Wal-Mart had for about $300 looks to be about the same size-wise.

What do I need to look for? Do all these units have tuners and remote controls? How hard is it to hook up a basic DVD player? (Wal-Mart had those for $37...) I'm not looking for home theater here - just a good durable package that won't take NASA to install it, and will hold up.

I think your on the right track with staying in the "disposable" market. Find what you like and order on-line.
With that said what the heck are you doing watching TV in the cabin anyways!
:p

Search thru ebay for mobile electronics. I got a 19" flat-panel Monitor/TV with tuner, speakers, PnP, and input from computer so I can run my navigation stuff on something bigger than laptop. Also found a lot of choices for 12V VCR's, DVD's etc. There are probably even more choices now.

Also check out www.tigerdirect.com--the have some greatmounting systems and good prices as well.

I want to get one of those satellite antenna's that you can mount in headliner like they put on Escalade at auto show last year.

Look at the picture, esp in the corners. See what looks best to you.

I think the Zenith/ LG models are a great value.

How do you feel about not mounting the tv, but keeping it in a padded case or wrapped in a blanket? It's not like you are going to be watching it while you're running anyway!

My laptop works well as a dvd player.

Any tv that you get for a boat is a roll of the dice. If you get one that was made on a Friday then it won't last long, Wed then maybe you stand a chance. You last set was obviously made on a Wed :D

The Sharp is a good set and we have put some LG/Zeniths in tough environments and they have worked well.....

I like the idea of a DVD/flatscreen combo. Seems like a small amount to pay for a cleaner installation. I'll keep shopping and watching ebay.
