Close Call on Mantoloking Road !!!
Clerk finds grenade while checking mail
Published in the Asbury Park Press 08/17/05
BRICK — An encrusted hand grenade, which had no fuse but contained explosives, was found in front of a Mantoloking Road business Monday afternoon, police Sgt. Frank Czaplinski said.
Czaplinski said the grenade, which appears to have been at the bottom of the river or bay for a long time and may date to World War II, was found by a clerk at the XXXXXX XXXXX XXXX & XXXXXX who was checking the mail.
Police cleared a small perimeter around the front of the store until the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit from Fort Dix responded. That unit examined the grenade and recovered it, Czaplinski said.
Czaplinski said it is possible that the grenade was tossed out a window by a passing driver or was caught up in a clamming net of a boat that stopped at the store.

After a further look around, they found the pin.
Thank God it never went off!!!
