CHINA's POWERBOAT INDUSTRY

CHINA’s BOATING BOOM

China reported that its middle class has grown to about 20% of the population (1.4 billion) or about 280 million people, which is about the total population of the U.S. With the rise of private enterprises in recent years, more and more high-income earners can afford top-end leisure commodities. Luxury is spreading in China. Many cities have witnessed a stampede of international luxury merchants opening shops to sell their products to enthusiastic consumers. The Bentley dealership in Beijing is, on a good day, one of the busiest in the world. Luxury car brands like Ferrari, Rolls Royce, BMW and Mercedes enjoy explosive sales volumes.

Following the fast expansion of golf (China now has the world’s largest golf course Country Club facility) and motor racing (China now has the world’s largest Formula 1 racing facility), a growing number of people are convinced that China will become a pleasure boating haven over the coming years. This year China entered the America’s Cup competition.

China has an extensive coastline and most of the coastal cities are quite affluent. Although there are presently only a handful of marinas in China, dozens are under construction or in planning and many luxury residences in major cities are incorporating waterways and boating infrastructure in their developments. The Chinese Government considers the pleasure craft manufacturing and related infrastructure industries an “encouraged sector” for foreign investment. Many municipal governments are seeking and considering detailed proposals on how to develop the city's small boating and yacht club marina industry over the next two decades. Provincial governments, property developers, boat builders are all investing heavily in the belief that recreational boating will become a part of everyday life in the world's most populous nation.

Such confidence that boating will play a major role in China is borne from the fact that the country's expanding upper middle class - best evidenced in the fast-rising coastal cities - means there are now many more wealthy people easily able to afford the recreational boating lifestyle.

The yacht club, marina and small boating business looks as if they are on a steady course for expansion, with the appropriate investment and the right supply industries.

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP INFRASTRUCTURE
FOR CHINA’S SMALL BOATING AND MARINA RESORT INDUSTRIES

China had no previous recreational boating industry, tradition and infrastructure. China’s small and recreational boating industry is indeed just starting to develop. However, it is fragmented and inexperienced, it is lacking in modern design, technology, quality control and world class standards. Chinese technology for boat building is more than 25 years behind. China wants to modernize. Lots of help from abroad is needed.

Help is needed to develop China’s boating industry. There are many opportunities to build and develop a whole new industry! Think of the possibilities – and tremendous potential.

For offshore powerboat racing enthusiasts:
