CC,
I would check the cable and shift linkage first. You can drain the drive 1/2 way and pull the back cap. Look at the shift fork/shift rod and have someone roll the motor over, with the kill cord pulled, and see if the cable is trying to move the shift fork cams. If it is trying to rotate and the cone and it wont come out of the gear, then it should be torn down. You might be able to pry the cone out, but if it is welded, well thing big money..

Hope this helps.. If you need some help walking through it.. give me a call in the evening.. 616-335-8446. Be glad to do what I can on the phone..

Dick

Funny this thread comes up when it did. Have a friend in a 31 Formula that was running in our group doing the Big Dicks run last weekend who got some air, missed on the throttle and "zinged" it a little, then "caught hard" (his words) when it landed. When we arrived at BD's he realized he was stuck in forward on one drive. I unhooked the primary shift cable and found things free and easy up to the shifter, but the lower was still stuck in position. I told him it could be a lower cable/shift arm problem, but was most likely a welded cone clutch. Told him he could run the rest of the weekend but having reverse in only 1 motor was gonna make docking a bytch. I'll have the boat this week so I can pull the drive and do a proper diagnosis.
Assuming it is a welded cone clutch, what all will I need and who has the best prices on parts? I have a Bravo manual, (I think), but may want to call on you Dick for any hints you may have.

Gordo,
Feel free to give me a call!! Is this a standard Bravo? If so, you cant order old parts anymore. Have to find them new old stock or used. Merc doesnt offer them anymore. They sell an upgrade kit to switch to the thicker floor gears and new clutch that goes with. The kit comes with everything for the upper housing. Makes for a nice rebuild. I have been putting steel towers in them also. Eliminates the next weak link and almost makes them an X drive..

Dick,
Yup, standard 1988/1989 Bravo I drive. I'm looking for a used upper now, but would take a used complete drive if the price was right. Then he would be on the water for the big weekend coming up and gives me time to go through his old drive.
I wish I could talk him into a pair of new drives, but he doesn't want to spend that much.
Thinking I'll be talking to you soon...
