this was nuts

i was out with some friends this weekend buzzing around the bay just off our local island hang out. i had my Scorpion and my friend was in his 30 Sleekcraft. out in this bay there is a very long sandbar that splits the channel and the islands that we hang out on. when the water is low the sandbars are esposed in some small areas and once in a while we will beach on them just for fun. kinda cool being out in the bay standing high an dry so far from shore . . . so i thought. lake freighters come and go on a regular basis and on the far side of the bay after a ship goes by a water surge will hit the point but this is about about a mile and a half away. the surge is usually only about a foot or so if that and the sandbar has taken some of the energy out of it. well this time we were on the sand bar and a monster of a freighter came out of the river. we were only about a half a mile away this time so just for the heck of it i decided to pull my bow anchor and shove off the sand a bit. as i was pushing i saw the surge hit the face of the bar about 30 seconds away. it was nasty and frik'n huge. pulled my anchor completly and pushed like there was no tommorow (my boat weighs about 6500lbs). for those that have never seen a freighter surge the water drops and than rises at about the same distance very rapidly a few times that goes back to mormal. this one was about a 3+ footer which is huge. by some miricle i was able to keep my boat off the bar and in the open water by pushing inbetween each surge.my friend . . .however. . . was not so lucky. he was beached and anchored when it hit . . . this is the result. picked up the entire boat and set it high an dry on the beach. completeley out of the water with the exception of a small part of the stern touching the waves :drink: :drink:

i have a real nice anchor line from top knot that is like 3/4 inch. that side of the sand bar drops off very steeply so i backed my boat sort of perpendicular to his on his stbd side than ran the line from his bow eye to one of my rear eyes. i than pulled the nose pivitoting on the stern and back into the wet stuff. it really didnt take a great deal of force because of how we leveraged the boat around. as a saftety precution i had the everone get as far away as the could in the opposite direction of the pull and i also tied a beach blanket around the mid point on the line. if the line breaks it will most likely fail at either end and the wet towel tied half way will keep the flying line from reaching either boat.

funny thing is i have two anchor lines, this real nice one from Top Knot and a cheaper one from BoatUS. i actually use the cheaper one for anchoring and have only used the nice one twice. both times were to pull someone off a sand bar. the other time was this guys brother :drink: :drink:

Freighters give off a hell of a wake. Not long ago some TV channel showed these crazy people surfing the waves wakes of freighters in the bay around Houston.

By the way... there is nothing wrong with the picture.

That IS the color of the water.
