That would give a good idea as to which drives they are. If they are 1st generation 6's, you need to find out how much time is "really" on the drives because, according to Matt at T-N-T, there are no more gear-sets for these drives. He told me last year when he did mine that I would have to "Do something" the next go-round. As in buy a completely diffrent drive or change the lowers. I have the 1st generation and the counter rotation is in the lower. Also, a little known fact is that 6's are usually only good for about 150 hours before they need a rebuild. If you could get the serial number off the drive, you could call Matt and ask him which drive you are looking at, or possibly look it up at mercruiserparts.com. I hope this helps. Nykamp, What up Bud? Looks like it's a little chilly up there :( Robert |

Tonto & Caveman,
I spoke with Jeff @ CMC (Compition Marine Center) a week or so ago. And It's my understand that the old gear sets are no longer available as you stated. How ever now mercury offers a conversion get that retro's it to make it the same as the 6a's in reference to the gear that is. The intial retro is about a Grand. but after that you can exchange gears just like any other # 6 at normal cost. Caveman, Unless it's huge power, you shouldn't have to worry to much about what I said above. But if it ever came to be an issue. At least the drives retro now instead of being obsolete. Cougarman |

Here is the drives on the new to me Skater.
What style are they? How can one tell without taking apart if they are converted to dry sump? I was told by the original owner it had 1.24 ratio. However it has been thru two dealers Cumberland and Aqua toy store. Dont know if they are the original drives. Cant get a straight answer out of them. There is a small screw under the cavitation plate marked 1.36. This is the ratio I need. Is there any other way to tell the ratio without counting teeth? Gerry |

Craig are there any other drain plugs other then the one under the Bullet. I have one under the bullet and under the cavitation plate. Some one mentioned if it is a converted dry sump it will have a additional drain plug. Can anyone confirm this??? |

Re: SSM#6,s

Re: SSM#6,s
In order for them to be dry sumped, there has to be an oil reservoir. There are two different reservoir styles I believe but none the less there has to be a reservoir in order for them to be dry sumped.
Turn the input shaft and count the output shaft orientation! 1.24:1 = 80% of a revolution for the propeller shaft or 10 o'clock 1.35:1 = 74% of a revolution for the propeller shaft or 9 o'clock 1.47:1 = 68% of a revolution for the propeller shaft or 8 o'clock |

There is a sight glass on the inside of the gimbal assembly. This is to the right of the input shaft. |
