Competitive EDGE Marine selected for rigging and final assembly of the first OutRider 27 Flying Boat

Fort Lauderdale, FL - - Klem Personal Flying Boats announced today that Competitive EDGE Marine, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida has been chosen to rig and provide final assembly of the first of their OutRider 27's. Heading up the project will be the team of Steven Schmidt, Coral Springs and Rick Turmel, of Tamarac, Florida.

The patented OutRider 27, named by Time Magazine as one of its 2001 Best Inventions and showcased on the Today Show, features technology such as vertical and horizontal stabilizers aft, that produce aerodynamic stability. A forward ski keeps the bow the right height so the rest of the boat can fly along behind, supported by the air that flows over and under it. This "flying effect" results in a boat that not only travels safely at high speeds, but also does so smoothly, without the harsh banging that traditional boats experience.

"When selecting the right company to rig the boat, we took a long, hard look at who we felt would best be able to assist us in reaching our speed targets, safely. We found that Competitive EDGE Marine shared our belief that you don't need to compromise on quality or safety to achieve high speeds. Both Steve and Rick have a longtime, winning track record in offshore powerboat racing, where every component counts, so we felt they were a perfect match," said Mike Luscombe, Vice President for Klem Flying Boats, Inc., the producer of the OutRider 27.

Schmidt, who has garnished three National and five World Championships, along with a Class One U.I.M. win to his credit, holds status as a past American Power Boat Racing (A.P.B.A.) Crew Chief of the Year. He is most widely recognized for his achievements with the Alcone Motorsports, Reliefband and Spirit of Puerto Rico Catamaran race teams, reaching speeds in excess of 160+ miles per hour.

Turmel's achievements stack high, with two OPBRA Gold Cup, two National and three World Championship Titles with his infamous, all-black "Extreme Stainless Marine" Vee bottom, including this years 2001 A.P.B.A. Offshore World Championship in the Super Vee Lite Class. He is also a recipient of the Keith Hazell OPBRA Throttleman of the Year Award and earned the Bob Kelly Memorial Competition Award for his dedication to the sport of offshore powerboat racing.

Both men joined forces last year with Competitive EDGE Marine to offer their services to the pleasure boating market.

"Steve and I are excited to be in on the planning and design of the OutRider line and look forward to working with Klem Personal Flying Boats to incorporate the techniques we have learned through racing," said Turmel.

"The one of a kind design, makes it intriguing to the performance boater who is looking for something different, rather than the standard Catamaran or Vee hull," added Schmidt, who says the combination of the stabilizers and ski, teamed with the body, give it a fun ride all its own.

Based in Richmond, Va., Klem Personal Flying Boats, Inc. was founded by Richard Klem in 1996. OutRider 27, the first of a complete line of OutRider Flying Boats, will be unveiled at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2002.
