Ignition suggestions for a Chevy Gen 4, 454.
I have a Gen 4, carbureted 454 that produces 450-500 HP. It currently has the stock ignition with an external coil. I would like to replace it with something different, however I would like to stay at 5000 RPM’s or less, therefore I need to have a rev-limiter. I have been considering a system with an internal coil or a HEI type of ingnition. Budget and reliability are higher on my list than performance gains. I guess if I were really persuaded that I would see significant performance gains from some other higher end system, I would consider paying the $$$ for it, but I do NOT want to scarifies any reliability. What would anyone suggest?
Thanks,
Adrian

Re: Ignition suggestions for a Chevy Gen 4, 454.
You might want to ask this in the Tech Q/A forum.
However, on a 500hp non-blower motor, I would probably just stay with the Thunderbolt ingintion as it is pretty much bulletproof. Folks I know who swapped to MSD'd didn't really see much of a difference on motors similiar to yours, except in their wallets.
Not sure, but you may be able to add a rev limiter to the stock system.

I've been running MSD'S for a few years, like the performance but have had some reliability issues, If I try anything different I'd look into the DUI setup....my .02
