Check with your insurance agent.
BTW, there might be some legal ramifications you might want to look into, if you should get "in trouble" as a captain.

it not real smart to be the owner of the boat and have a captain lic.
If you want to do this you should put the boat in someone name other then yours or a company name that is owned by other.
You should do this so you are not an owner operator. If some thing should happen you loose everything you have.

Hey rick,

How does having the license change this...you'll lose everything you have anyway...no?

with out a capt lic. and the right INS. coverage you have a wall in front of you that will help to some point they come after you as third party.

If you have a capt lic there is no wall in front of you. You are held responsible
If had a capt lic I will not tell my ins company.

I thinks this is how it was explained to when I got my sportfish INS.

If someone could expand in this I would really appreciate it. I have a 100T Masters license and currently own 4 boats for personal use. What higher standard am I being held? I don't make a living on the water, but still maintain my license should someone a Capitan. 99.9999% of my hours are personal. Creating another company for the boats seems like a PITA. Separate insurance, new registrations more paperwork.

i also have a 100ton license it does not affect your personal use. here is an example if i am running my boat, or any other boat, for personnel use and get in an accident or receive a DUI it is the same as anyone else. if i am operating under the authority of my license then it gets serious. hope that clears it up.

I also have a Masters and was told if you are involved in a DUI, even during recreational boating, to shut up and don't even hint that you have a USCG license because the USCG could still revoke it. Don't know if it's true or not. Also, there is almost no boating accident situation where someone has not violated the COLREGS, most commonly for unsafe speed or not a proper lookout, there could be an instance during recreational boating where you may be held to a higher standard and in boating accidents whoever was least negligent usually prevails.

My insuarnce agent, State Farm, didn't know the difference between a USCG Masters and Boater Safety Course. Gave me the same discount.

22.5 degrees abaft of beam, crossing or overtaking?
