I have always kept/registered my boats out of state..can anyone tell me if I were to have a documented boat in CA, would I have to pay PPT? and if so what are the rates?

Thanks

Yes, and don't ask. Why not register it with the Coast Guard and avoid the whole thing?

If the boat is Coast Guard "Documented" do you still pay personal property tax in CA?

If the boat is NOT documented with the Coast Guard, you may be liable for Unsecured Property Tax for the boat. The reason I say you "may be liable" is because they usually don't go after you, but when you go somewhere to dock (usually a Marina) they report your CF numbers to the Ca. State Board of Equilization and then you will have to pay. Most people don't get caught and don't pay the tax.
If your boat is documented with the Coast Guard, you don't have to worry about it. Trust me, this is all true, I am speaking from experience firsthand :D
