Coastguard Certified??? HELP

Does anyone know the advantages/disadvantages of buying a boat that is coast gaurd registered? Ohio title department is telling me that you have to pay taxes on them, but other states you don't. I am told that there is no title (per say) to change over. That makes me a little nervous. If anyone knows anything about this please let me know. I was ready to buy the boat, but now it starting to sound to complicated.

HELP!!!!!!!

When it is registered with the Coast Guard, they will legally know who owns the boat. When I just sold my PP, the release of lein was sent to the CG from my bank. Here in California, you can get a bill for unsecured property tax for a boat (but not an RV  ), if your boat is CG documented, California doesn't make you pay the tax. Different states have different laws

Semper Fi,
Thank you for the info. Do banks frown on this when lending money? I am told that here in Ohio you have to pay sales tax anyway, so am I better off with a title. Is it hard to get a boat like this titled? I was told that I would have to get a letter of deletion from the Coastguard?????

I really can't say. Contact the Coast Guard and see what they tell you. I only posted what I know to be true from experience, sorry I couldn't be more help.

My understanding is a CG or "Documented" vessel has a documented title like a home. You have to go through a marine titling service. They trace back the title from owner to owner to manufacturer. That way the boat cannot be "sold" without the proper documentation. Also my understanding is a documented vessel must be at least 40 feet in length. If the rules have changed maybe someone can tell more.

You will have to pay the tax to get the ohio state sticker. Just take the bill Of sale to the BMV & they will issue a title...No biggie..Except paying the Friggin Tax !!

True, except a documented vehicle can be approx. 28' + (somewhere in that range) My last boat, a 33' Powerplay was documented with the CG
