What is the main advantage to Document a boat? I was told by NY DMV that you still have to pay sales tax in order to register the boat.

The reason why a finance company would not allow you to do it yourself is because banks require the documentation agents to carry an Errors and Emmissions (E&O) Policy. This is a relatively expensive insurance that protects the banks mortgage in the event that it is not filed properly or if a lien shows up that was not reflected on the abstract of title. Banks then require the agents to provide proof of their E&O and put them on their "approved" list of Doc agents.

Call Sarah. She is very helpful, process is very simple (give her a name and port of call and go! LOL), and price is reasonable (think @$350) a year ago, anyway. I used her service and not a single problem or complication, took about 6 mos. as she said, and you guys have heard, to finally get the papers. Bill (buyafountain) reccomended her to me.

And everything that I've heard says, the tax WILL cometh, as well :hothead: :( I just said F'it and paid my sales tax ... didn't want Stateys pulling me over every weekend and possibly impounding my rig ... My NJ State reg sticker is now proudly displayed on my hull for all to see   :D

Not all states allow documentation in lieu of tax. Missouri is one state that does have this provision however you pay personal property tax on your boat. Some banks require that you document the boat if they carry the loan, which has nothing to do with paying state sales tax.
