Yes, the drive has the raw water pump and the engine has a circulating pump, which looks like any SBC automotive water pump.
Both are needed.
If you wanted to install an engine mounted raw water pump and an external pickup, you could. But the pump in the drive must remain operational as it also helps keep the drive lube cool. The discharge from the drive pump could be used to supply a drive shower.

So its not like my old bravo which had the cirulation pump in front and then the raw water belt driven pump down low. On the alpha this is the pump that is in the drive?

Alpha drives only have a pump in the outdrive..take off the bottom half and there she be....There is the typical water circulation pump on the front of the block like all small blocks etc...easy fix on the alpha's...Should take two peeps but I did a handful of times by myself.

Thanks as long as I don't have to hang upside down like on my old bravo set up.
While I had the drive off I replaced the lower shift cable and boot. That wasn't hard either.

Actually, if you switch to a sea water pump, the pump in the foot of an Alpha isn't necessary. That little tube going through the drive doesn't mean much for cooling, when you compare it to the entiire drive being submerged in water. It's just like my Trs drive, which has no water pick up in the drive, it cools from the water around it. A drive shower would make a MUCH bigger difference than a water pickup.
