Big question on the first Bertram 38' Comp.
John Crouse in him Searace wrote that at the Hennessy Grand Prix off Pt.Pleasant in July 19,1973 Sammy James with the astronaut Gordon Cooper raced in the new Bertram 38',Whittaker Moppie, the first of a succesful race boat saga.
This below is the picture.
But in HORBA's site I have found this pictures below. I think that is the same boat.
I don't know the year, but we can see clearly the lenght 36'.
moroever we can see the different deck not like the typical Bertram 38' and above all, the hull in the bow is totally different.
This is the real Bertram 38' Whittaker Moppie in 1974 with Sammy James and Jack Stuteville.
The difference with the first two boats is substantial.
What do you think about?

Re: Big question on the first Bertram 38' Comp.
The 36 shown (midle pic) was a prototype ( only one built) to test the lifting strake placement. Bertram then built the 16 of the 38 comps. and only about 1/2 are running today. Racing takes it's toll. They got busted up, flipped etc.
The 36 had a plywood deck, and i believe it's Phil Lewis in the boat.
The two boats look quite different but the running surfaces are identical - except length. A 20 degree deadrise V and a pad.

Thank you Wannabe.
Then is correct assert that in 1973 James raced with the proto 36',not the 38' and then in 1974 start the 38' story.
Be Interesting the news that was build sixteen 38' for competitions since the boats factory don't divulge easy those datas.

If you look close you will see Bill Gazell in the boat.
He has been racing all his life & has won more Championships
than anyone in offshore history. He is the 2004 P-5 Champion.
He is leading this year in P-4 & will probably win tthe championship.. Good luck " Great Adventure "
