Piracy has been around for decades. I have a salt resistant riot shotgun at my shop that was handed down from my father back from his days of regular crossings. If you need to borrow it let me know.
Read the book The Island (I think let me check) and you will see the true stories of the boats that have disappeared.
My dad used to take the riot shotgun and a high powered rifle. One time a pirate pulled up along side of him while he was in his sport fish and he left my mom at the helm and went down and stood on the back of the boat with his rifle, the boat quickly took off. These days if you let them get close enough you will probably be outgunned.
WIth the government equipment these days I am sure it is much safer than back in the 80's and 90's but take your street smarts with you.
Pirates kill you and use your boat to run drugs, people, or part it out for money. My dad actually had a friend that never was found.
Read the book it is quite interesting.
BTW, where is the thread you refer to.
