Default Prochargers.....keep em or add more C.I.

Buying a boat with 500efi's and Prochargers. Not sure I want to keep them on the boat. The other option is to make carbed 540's and run a little slower, but hopefully alot longer.

Anyone have some time with Prochargers and willing to provide their real world experiences with them. I'm concerned they will burn alot of extra fuel and shorten the life of the motor.

PS> I have been told the motors have been overheated and although running fine now, should be opened up this winter anyway.

I put about 100 hours on a Cig Top Gun w/ procharged 500efi power.
Loved the prochargers and will buy these again- if needed.

The person who bought my boat 3 years ago uses it regularly and has never had an issue !

The charger itself works great its the whole setup that I dont like. When in doubt, whip it!!

Thanks for the reply.....
My concern is blowing head gaskets and fuel burn. What do you think your MPG was on the cig. Hoping to maintain close to the 1.5 gph that I currently see in a 31 ft w/ 502/415's.

The 500's will drink more gas, and 540's will drink even more(than your 502's). As long as your not in boost, your gas mileage shouldnt go down too far, but when you press the sticks you will pay.

I think at cruise speed the procharger motor will get better MPG then the bigger NA motor. BUT when deep in the boost they are very thirsty.
If thet are set-up properly they will run fine. Most importantly the computers should be remapped correctly. Procharger says to use thier regulator to pump up the fuel pressure and thats it. Not too safe from what ive heard. Depending on how much boost maybe bigger injectors and lines too. Also on my boat it has a 2 bar map sensor which basically reads boost and vacuum and adjusts the fuel and timing correctly for both.

If tuned properly a mild blown setup won't be any less reliable than an N/A motor. If you're blowing head gaskets and having issues something is not setup properly.

Why not keep the prochargers and do the 540 anyway

Which PC's? F2, F1 etc? they run off the standard cerp belt or have a dedicated 10rib? cog?

Don't even know which Procharger model is on the boat. I was told it was running higher boost at one time (8-10??) but now has been turned down to something less (5-6??) Can anyone tell from these pics?
