Default Question than may bake your noodle...

Hooked everything up after a complete Port engine removal to replace the coupler I ran the motor about 10-15 minutes or so and had a small Exhaust leak. Turned off the engine to fix the leak and when I went to turn the motor back on this is what happened.

1: engine started but the started stayed on! No stuck in, but on live.
2: Turned off key – Starter kept running! But with no spark it would not fire engine
3: I turned off the batteries from the switch; But no luck! Even with the battery switches off the started still had power and kept turning the engine over!
4: I pulled the neg. cable on one battery; this stopped the starter!

I double-checked every wire I touched to be sure nothing was arching, and all was good. So I hooked the battery ground up and again same thing, starter was getting power but with out the key on no spark so the engine would not fire.

I checked the key switch, That’s Ok.
I Checked the Started, That’s OK No wires rubbing
I than hooked the ground up again and she kept starting (with no spark because the key was off) and I flipped the battery switches back and forth and the starter stopped! I than turned the port engine key on and I heard the electric fuel pump kick on- GREAT – But the engine would not start, I had no power going to the starter. And the kicker is the starboard engine witch I never touched will turn over with power going to the starter but I don’t have power running to the Fuel Pump! I hope I explained that good enough, some thing get lost in translation with type.

Disconnect battery. Pull the small wire from the starter solenoid. reconnect battery. If the starter then runs again after you hook up battery, then the starter solenoid is stuck or shorted closed.

If it does not, and if you have a Mercury starter circuit, there will be another smaller relay mounted somewhere near the round connector. Disconnect the battery. Remove the small wire from the small auxilliary relay. Reconnect battery. If starter engages, then this relay is shorted closed / stuck.

If it does not engage with the small wire disconnected, then your starter switch must be shorted closed / stuck.

Had similar problem. Solenoid by mercathod unit stayed energized.

Yup, it's mine now, bought it last year. I sure would like to know alot more about its history. My email is [email protected] if you'd like to share any info.

I have the engines out and rebuilding them. Nice hardware inside. Going through the drives too. Going to restore the engine room; it hasn't really been taken of well.
