Question Never hurts to ask .....

OK - I've got a Volvo diesel that's been a pain in my a$$ for quiet some time. So - just maybe someone on the board may know if a person that has experience with them and can lead me in the right direction - as no one (5 different certified Volvo techs) can seem to nail it.

KAD 42 - Supercharged/Turbocharged diesel.
Initial problem - overheated.
Had a Volvo tech tear the motor completely apart - check everything, installed new rings, reman head, reman turbo (two actually - first one full of blasting media) new exhaust manifold - dyno pulled the motor - 30+lbs of boost @ 3800.

NOW! Stick it in the boat and the motor only turns up when the S/C is kicked in & not as far as it should turn up (clutch controlled between 1400 and 2500 RPM) Once the S/C is off - motor falls back to 2300 or so. Lack of turbo boost.

BTW - running DP drives.

Had the injector pump tested - all is well. Injectors also.
Disconnected the exhaust hose between the transom plate and the outdrive - no change.

Oh - I did install a new transom plate while the motor was out. Same as the other side - updated plate - but the other side has the same one.

Back to my rant - Pulled the props - installed all new hubs and hardware. Props checked - all is well.

If you nail the "good" motor while the other one idles the boat will damn near get on plane (10,000 lbs). If you nail the problem child it's like the motor is bogging. Talked to a guy that works on the injector pumps who's first thought was to adjust the amount of fuel by cranking it up - which I did. Now we get a little black smoke - but still no go once the S/C is off. This is the 2nd turbo on the boat - all Volvo remans. Timing has been checked numerous times - all good. I'm thinking exhaust back pressure at this time but unfortunately the tool to adapt to the riser is over $500. What a joke. I'm looking for any advice or a contact that knows these motors and their characteristics. I do a ton of work on outdrives, 500hp's, etc.. and now I'm maintaining Whipples old Eliminator (What a beast!!)

I'm no dummy - but I'm obviously not a diesel guru either.

Help a brother out.....

Take Care!
