I'm just happy my boat does four of the six in the poll fairly well. 31ft AO cat. Twin 509 cu. in. with B&M 250 blowers. The wife wouldn't allow scoops on HER sunpad, or I'd have used bigger blowers.

At the time there were no gears available for Bravos taller than 1:36 or props larger than 34 pitch, and after a few runs in the Shootout of 122mph at a little over 6000 rpm, one of the hydraulic cams gave up the ghost and broke in half.

I then went with flow ported Dart alum heads and full solid roller cams that pulled strong well above 6000 rpm. Changed to Manley H-beam rods also at that time in anticipation of the higher revs. These cams idled great at 900-1000 rpm and go to 700-750 rpm in gear.

Then I bought the smallest upper blower pulley they had. These little pulleys gave it a real nice blower surge, though not as good as the bigger blowers at high boost.

So my best Shootout run to date was 133mph. I had 6800 rpm chips in the MSD box and I remember as I was approaching the radar gun that I thought it was going to hit the limiters, but it didn't. Them little blowers were screamin'. I also run the exhaust dry for Shootouts.


I got a lot of compliments later about how good that thing sounded coming up the course. I guess after an afternoon of listening to many of the participants buzzing them through at 5200-5600 rpm, hearing a blown BB screamin by at close to 6800 rpm was a little refreshing. Or as I heard, "that's more like it".


For me though, my vote goes to that big azz cam idling, especially with the dry exhaust :cool:

Sitting at the dock, after firing the first engine. Everyone takes notice. Then you start the second engine. That's the moment right there.

Of course triples or quads and/or turbines trump that.

I like big cam engines idling and I also like the sound of blower whine and surge. Here is one of our engines at idle.

Between me and the 41 that Apache1 has at the marina, the fishing guys get plenty to b*tch about. Though they have never said anything to my face, I get the feeling that the fishing guys don't like us much. Even with the mufflers on, the engines in both boats still have a little bark to them, but they really are not that bad. If they want to hear loud we will just have to go to dry pipes! :eek:

Believe it or not, we actually try to respect them and keep it as quiet as possible in the bay and marina. In the ocean it is another story though! Out there I do my best to make enough noise to wake up every person that is sleeping on the beach. :D :p :D
