Never try to fend the boat off w/ your hands or feet.
Just place a fender at impact point.
Its easier to do some glass and gel repair than to replace a body part.

Woman Loses Foot in Boating Accident 10/18/06

A 60-year-old woman from Indian River lost her foot Friday, October 16th. when she fell off her cabin cruiser as it was trying to dock at the Silver Fox Marina in Summerside on Prince Edward Island, Canada.

The boat was being backed into its berth at the club. Lea Brown was on the diving platform trying to push the 30-foot cruiser away from another boat docked nearby when she lost her balance.

Police believe her foot was caught in a propeller.

Brown was taken to Prince County Hospital. A scuba diver retrieved the foot and took it to the hospital about a half hour later, but doctors were not able to reattach it. The incident is under police investigation.

I don't know how many times I have told people NOT to fend off when docking with an arm or leg, for one it is dangerous as seen here and B it screws up my docking when they push off, I have it under control and can dock without touching a thing but when you push off my planning is shot to heck because now I have to compensate for your actions. My dads brother broke an arm doing this 30 years ago and it sticks in my head every time I dock and there are people on board. I mean really, you would not put your arm or foot out of your vehicle to avoid an accident now would you? You know you can't stop the vehicle this way, so why on a boat, thats what the rub rail is for. This must have been a mess, I wonder how she got her foot this low to hit a prop, on a cabin cruiser of 30 ft, with a possible inboard or an IO? I bet it was just squeezed off by the platform to other boat contact and must have been a really sick site to look down and see a stub with no foot on it. It must have been a blood bath also with a main artery and water, it looks worse than it is but in this case I bet it was as bad as it looked. Oh well, at 60 you are pretty much confined to a wheel chair so it is not too bad. :eek: :eek: :D :D

Well, i used to fend off my 13 whaler, but at 2-3mph had very little momentum.

First of all I feel terrible, get well soon!!! :( I always tell my passengers to keep hands and feet in the boat at all times. I could see lots of these types of accidents happening.
However, she does get an "A" for effort. :D I also tell my passengers to protect the boat at all times at any cost :evilb: .
I keep a pole and a hook on the boat, and use that if needed.

Actually, I run away when I see a guy pulling into a slip with the boat hook in hand.. :eek:

I don't have either one on my boat.... never need them... :cool: :drink:

Then how do you fend off the other boats that are about to hit you at the dock or ramp. Did you think I use that pole to dock c'mon give me a break! :evilb: :D :evilb:
