We went on a house boat trip four years ago, and the weekend before....two 65 foot house boats were capsized, tore apart and sunk. We found one of the beaches that one was tied at, it was only about 12 feet deep. You could see all this crap down there and went diving down for fun. We pulled up a bar stool. :drink:

Lake Mead has more acre feet of water than any other reservoir in the western hemisphere. It is exceed in shoreline only by Lake Powell which is further upstream. Lake Powell has more shoreline than the Pacific shoreline from Mexico to Canada.... Starting to get the picture? Powell has so many canyons and fingers, you can boat there for years and never see them all. I'll post a picture of Lake Powell from space.

I believe what you think looks like a crater is actually Navajo Mountain. The darker area?

I can't give any experience on Mead's "rough" water, but I know Lake Powell can be rather interesting at times. I have seen 6-7 foot rollers in Padre Bay and the main channel near the dam before.

Lake Powell is another awesome lake, but its down over 90 feet at this time (Lake Mead is down 102). But there is still plenty of both lakes for a lot of great boating. If this drought ever ends (8 years and counting) and water comes back up, there are few if any nicer places to boat. After you leave the crowds at the launch ramps and marina's, there is always a lot of private beaches for everyone. By the way, when Powell is full it has over 2000 miles of shore, but is much shallower than Mead. Much of Powell is shear cliffs, canyons and gorges. Lightning and thunder storms in a deep canyon are spectacular!

I always thought it was cool how you could be in Nevada and then Arizona. I also like driving up to the Hoover Dam, it's an amazing sight to see from the water.
I did see plenty of go-fast boats and feel that there is not much room for error when driving in- between two huge walls of rocks at high speeds.
Have you seen or heard of anyone hitting the walls??

Casino, yes, on very rare occasion, there has been a boat up on the rocks, or bouncing off the walls. But this is usually driver error, sometimes caused by one beer too many. The most dangerous thing to me in the narrow canyons, is a PWC driver who never looks around before making a sharp turn.

That is Navajo mountain. I'll post another pic with Navajo Mountain in the background. Then you will get a perspective of how tall it rises above the plateau.
