** As agreed by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the Inmarsat E service will be withdrawn on 1 December, 2006. IMO MSC Circular 1171 refers. Inmarsat has arranged for replacement 406 MHz Epirbs to be provided for all registered users, free of charge. Details of the exchange procedure etc can be found, in English and German, on www.inmarsat.com at Customer Support > Service Announcements.
The Inmarsat E system provides global maritime distress alerting services via Inmarsat satellites. Distress alerts transmitted from Inmarsat E emergency position indicating radio beacons (EPIRBSs) are relayed through Inmarsat satellites to dedicated receiving equipment located at four land earth stations (LESs): Aussaguel, France; Santa Paula / Southbury, USA; Perth, Australia; and Goonhilly, UK. See Inmarsat-E coverage map.
