Stellings extension box refinish
1 Attachment(s)
Some ot the paint on my Stellings extension boxes is flaking off. Company states these are anodized and then painted.
Contemplating removal and complete refinish during the down season. What is the best way to prep these for re-finishing? Can they be powdercoated if they are already anodized? |
Re: Stellings extension box refinish
My late 1990's Stellings Ext Boxes were factory powder coated and flaking/pealing was an issue. I shipped mine back to Stellings and they had the PC stripped and then painted them. I paid to have this done; however, this finish has preformed well for 7 years.

The boxes on my 97 Black Thunder were power coated and peeling badly by 2000. I removed, wire brushed clean in and out, and shot with etching primer and Imron. Worked grat but a LOT of work.

The paint on ours started to peel off so we stripped them and painted them with imron. Here is how they came out.

Mine was also peeling. It definetly was not annodized. After sandblasting, I painted them with a epoxy primer and then rattle can black appliance epoxy. Lasted for several years with no signs of failure.

powerdercoat is nice when new , as soon as a chip , scratch ,nick , anything , it allows corrosion to spread quick ..
paint is better imho... |
Re: Stellings extension box refinish
Chris,
I was going to say that I had no idea what I paid; then the first file I looked in still had the 1997 receipt in it! I paid $800 per box including the return freight. As the UPS freight out was $50 ea, that was a net $750 ea. That also included new carrier bearings and some updated machining that made the alignment of the carrier bearing easier/possible. If your boxes are post 1997, this isn't likely an issue for you. I remember squealing when I got the bill, but I did end my carrier bearing alignment issues. My boxes now have an additional 10 years on them with no issues and they still look new. |
