I have a 30 Shadowcat which is much heavier than a 32 skater and I am running twin 1999 Promax 300's.They are great 6100 rpm max rev limiter which is very conservative and easy on the motoers.I am near 100mph.Gas OIL turn the key and go.The 300x revs higher but is a little more tempermental and revs to about 6700.

Go with twin 300X not the Promax engine. 20" mids. Assume anything used will need a rebuild. P.S. I didn't buy a Fountain!!!!!:evilb: |

2.5's are only a pain in the ass if you have hacks working on them, ya they require rebuilds every 75-100 hours but they can and will produce more power than any other outboard. -300 Promax is a good motor, low reving, getting old they need to be rebuilt. 6300 rev llimit -300x more power, not as reliable 6900 rev limit -E-Tec... not a good idea. 6000 rev limit with 1.86 gears you are speed limited because of prop selection to around 90 mph. If it were mine, I would buy 3 250XS motors with 1.62 gears. They run on 87 rev to 6400 and should put you in the 105-110 range... and are fairly reliable. RT |

My buddy has a 32' skater with 300x's. Runs 102 in the right conditions. He loves the motors. You will hate 2.5's because of mixing the oil with the gas and they load up all the time

a buddie of mine has the old Tequila skater put on a set of 300xs the boat runs 114 on gps......I have 300 promaxs and they are great just watch the lowers every other time you head out (change oil and look for water) and youll be ok......
post pics when you get a chance and let me know when your done I might be a buyer......you make your boats real nice and im kicking around the idea of a 32 skater w/outboards. |

A few points
--agreed on the mixing oil for the 2.5's.......it is a pain but not the end of the world. --I personally would hold off on the 300XS motors, I have heard no issues with them, but I am hoping that Merc will raise the rev limit on them like they did on the 250XS, the originals were limited to 6150, later 6450.... this makes them a lot easier to prop.. not to mention they are infact a proven motor. --Gearcases on all of the mercs have issues, but all have solutions. There are some myths about not shifing the 2.5's while running which is BS, if your motor is set up correctly they will idle at 800 and shift like a fishing motor. My personal motor just came off a Clearwater Fl dyno at 355hp on 91 octane and idles at 700... this is a lot easier than wave jumping. On the 3.0 and 3.2 motors, they have a habit of spitting seals and filling with water. The best way to solve this is to mount a Bravo drive resivior in the cowling than run a vent hose to the vent plug in the top of the gearcase. This keeps the seals in them ( it is the shift shaft seal that is the problem ).... also good Gear oil like Alisyn Type 2 helps some. RT |
