If you want anything resembling performance, go with the Merc 300xs's. The old dependability gap has narrowed to insignificance as well.

Those new Merc's are stout, economical and will give you a much higher speed ceiling to work with.

What are the torque curves and max rpm hp rpm numbers? This would make the decision for me on which motor I would choose for a particular boat.

There is a brand new 38 Fountain at my marina two lifts over from me. It has 3 of the new mercs on it and wow, they're BIG! Not really any room to fish over the back. It looks like it would be hard to pull a big fish in from the rear of the boat or work your line around the back of the motors.

The boat is on a 12K lift and it's struggling....

My boss is repowering his 39' Midnight with 3 Verado's. He had two Optimax on there before (underpowered).

I'm looking forward to hearing how he likes these motors and I know he'll give me an honest assessment.
