how about an old LORAN!
i had a garmin 276c an it was great, but not cheap.
maybe find a used one, or not the color unit.
i just mounts to your dash, 3 screws, and has a rechargable battery.

look at the garmin 72 $159.00/ mount $30.00 simple unit to learn and use but it's a hand held (smaller screen)...fixed mount a garmin 152 may still be available although it's been out for a while it has less bells and whisles making it easier to learn..$300.00, last years model was 172 still pretty easy and less than $500. hope this helps I have been teaching people how to use GPSs for 14 years now and people seem to catch on to Garmins the fastest.

Yep, I want simple technology too.
Just tell me where I need to go, I don't need to know all the info these things can tell me now, and I don't want to pay for things I'm not gonna use. Or do I have the time to learn how to use them. It's a project for me to change the message on my voice-mail.
I don't need to know what temperature the cabin is vs. the cokpit, vs. the engine compartment.
Just tell me what direction to go.
I'm capable of reading a chart and compass (unless, I have two gal's wanting a ride - in that case I might get lost... - back in my single days....).
But simple navigation makes it much easier on a daily basis
