I would definately agree that 88 in a 24 foot boat would be terribly scary. I would never do that. My Scarab 22 does about 67 and that is almost scary in a 22 foot boat. Seriously, tabs and practice will work for now and you will have more fun later if you keep the power you have. There is no reason to run anything above your comfort zone. You probably don't run the sled wide open in a white-out, do you? |

Scary? My 24 Marlin has a 540 fuel injected at 625HP and runs in the low 90's. Still too slow! A little chine walk never hurt anyone. If it is too fast, steal a governor off a golf cart and set it at golf cart speed. That way you won't be scared and can fish on your trip!:D :D :D :D

Don't dump the power you have. Just don't use all the throttle. As you become more comfortable with it, nudge her up a bit and have fun! If you still want to run at 75%, that motor will last (almost) forever.

The original (if yours is) Merc 525SC had a lower compression (around 7.5 to 1) ratio than the Merc 454 (around 9 to 1). This is one reason they lasted so long (I had a friend get over 660 hours on them). Therefore, if you pull the blower off, you'll also need an intake manifold for mounting your carb. This combination (no blower and lower compression) should easily handle the 87 octane gas and be a little safer for a newby. The Merc 525SC was a very good motor). TH

I'll trade you a Brand New Hybird "Minn Kota." It's battery operated so gas won't be an issue any more either.
