The number I hear thrown around as a 'rule of thumb' on most stock motors is a life expectancy of about 1000 hours - well maintained, of course. 700 is getting up there, as is the age. 700 hours on a motor 3 years old verses 700 hours on a motor 14 years old also makes a huge difference. I honestly wouldn't expect them to last much longer before a rebuild is necessary. But having said that, I know of a guy who owns a commercial boat with a pair of 496's who has turned 2000. However, they're only 2 years old. "It still has some in it, till it don blowed up yahh know..." |
my 502's show almost 700 hours and i know the hour meter has been replaced i have put 400 on it and it is almost all at wide open throttle and they are perfect , use no oil and have 60 pounds of oil pressure. but i am a maintence freek

use marineassult in Tulsa. He did my 502 and I am extrememly happy with the work done and the price. You should at least plan on a top end rebuild. The springs and valves have got to be tired after 700 hours.

Most people can relate easier to mileage, so somebody figured out that every 200 hours relates to about 15,000 miles on your car. I heard this many years ago from a Mercruiser rep and nobody's ever told me it was way off.
I would think that there are many variables that would affect these numbers. |

700 hours, depends on how well maintained, I'd not be afraid of them, but would also expect a rebuild soon, as you never know how the previous owner REALLY operated the boat. Expect a full rebuild by a reputable builder to be $7,500ish per motor. |

40 hours = 10,000 miles is 250 MPH AVERAGE!:D I think you can replace the motors with new for less than 7500 each, they are 330 HP 454's. |
