Default Help Volvo DPX Drive problem

Hello,

A friend of mine has a 03' 30' Warlock with a Volvo DPX drive that is stuck in neutral. The boat was run for about 1/2 a day (easy running) off and on, then when started for a run the drive wouldn't shift into gear.

Now the shifter when pulled back to neutral has some tension and resistance, and a little "spring back" if you can imagine

The boat has only 60 hrs of responsible driving. Standard duo prop set up, Gaffrig shifter.

Im thinking broken or damaged cable....? Any thoughts on this guys?

There is a small cover on the back top of the drive two allen head bolts ( Maybe One ) pull it off and you will see the shifter linkage. you can disconnect it, and see if youre cable still binds.

yep, also inside that cover is a casting with 4 10mm bolts and a bellcrank type of assembly. pop that off and you have access to the all the internal shift mechanisms. its a pretty simple drive with just a small sliding wedge that runs the cone between the two clutches.

The shift cable runs through a 1" OD housing ("tube") and then through the transom assembly directly to the bellcrank assembly. Check inside the boat to make sure the cable isn't kinked, pinched or burned. Not much that can go wrong inside the drive itself. Here's a link to the Shift mechanism

great link Chuck Thanks. Hey do you have any idea if the gear ratio is in the upper or lower in the DPX drive. i see it stamped on the upper I.D. tags but on that web site they list uppers and lowers in specific ratios. is it in both? if it is in both where is it stamped on the lower? thanks

I have the same drive on my cruiser and the cable nut that connects under the control box spun itself off. It has a locking nut and still came off. The cover came right off and was an easy fix. I thought the marina was trying to put it to me because I just had 2500.00 worth of work done to the drives. Good luck. Danny

No sweat. Gear ratio is determined by the lower unit. If you need something, let me know. I have a set of E3 props, a transom assembly, two DPX-R 1.59's and a DPX-A Upper that I don't really need. The DPX-A is actually complete, but needs a set of gears (it was a 1.47).

thanks Chuck, i was curious because they stamp it on the upper. hmmm . . .ya think they'd put it somewhere on the lower. yes i might be interested in the DPX-A stuff, i can always use spares and i may have some gears. whats the differance between the R and the A drives?
