I had a 27' baja with 350's and alphas like cuda. The tie bar was a great add. I never changed mine from both rh rotation, but i always heard it wasnt as much for speed as for handling. You probably notice a lot of prop steer when you go from 50 and back of the throttles. It probably has a nice pull to the right. It would help with that, but in the long run, probably not worth it.

Two right hand turning props will make the boat heel to the left most of the time. Wait until you pop one of the alphas and you can get a left hander for the port side.

Docking is easier with counter-rotaters turning out. I don't think you'll go faster enough to notice it.

If you decide to make the switch, and it's an alpha drive, all you have to do is get a counter rotating lower. They make the Alpha a counter rotater by moving the drive gear from it's normal position in the rear of the case to the front, behind the propshaft carrier. That is the only difference. This also depends on what Alpha drives you have. (R, MR, GenII etc, etc.)

In the above case I swapped from right hand alpha drives to counterrotating bravos, and replaced the motors as well. Wanted to test the old props against the new lab finished bravos. It actually ran faster with the old right turning ballistic props in the one motor in reverse mode, both props turning right!

Needless to say, I kept the counterrotating props on and move both throttle handles in the same direction. <gg>

You can't run an alpha in reverse. They are designed to handle power in forward only.

is this normal? yes
would i benefit from counter rotating props? yes
should i change the port lower unit to turn left? yes

What kind of drives are they?

Whoops, thanks cuda, removing my post.. Don't want someone blowing up an Alpha. <gg>

if you chnge the lower to a cr......it is much easier to get props to test........they always come in pairs.....one left, one right.

A friend had a 1988 Nova spyder with CR Alphas and 270Mags from factory.
