Default Scarab 33 AVS VS. 31 Sonic

Opinions? Differences in room, ride, rigging, consruction, etc? Im sure the avs would be faster with the step hull. Looking to downsize from my 40, but need a decent sized trailerable boat with a decent cabin for overnighting. Thanks, MT

My brother Sloman is on OSO he has a 31 Sonic w/t496's,and I personally think that a 31 sonic is one of the best pound for pound offshore rough water boats around. He and his fiance weekend on it all the time with plenty of room for them.As for speed I dont know what the scarab will do but I belive his boat will do 76-78 gps....Hope it helps, here's a pic of his,Sonics have great lines..

I spent a little time on wigginout's 33AVS last weekend. Its a well laid out boat. It has probably the MOST comfortable driving position of ANY boat I have been on. I did not get to ride; but I do know Ken was running 88 or 89 at one point last weekend with his pair of 525EFIs.

I looked a a lot of 31' Sonics when I was looking to upgrade from my 26' Sonic. The 31SS is the BEST selling Sonic. Its a great layout, and the pull-out settee-to-bed is exclusive to Sonic. It was really hard NOT to buy one, but I held out for a bigger boat.

MT,
Let me know if I can answer any questions for you about the 33 Active Thunder. The boat is a railed rocketship at 92mph w/ 525EFIs. Its a significantly bigger boat than either of the aforementioned, as both of them include a molded swim platform in overall length. The 33AVH AT gives you the option of a bolt on platform for true 33' of boat. Its actually very easy to mistake for a 37 at times. Pics are all over the website linked below.

I do like the AT boats too. Just hard to find a decent used one! Between the Sonic, and AT, which one has the nicer-bigger cabin?

Thanks Brian. I was going to buy the Sonic because of the cabin but I like the lines of the Scarab. It just has THE LOOK. If you are going to sleep on the boat go with the Sonic. If you want a Classic well built boat go with the Scarab. The scarab weighs 8400 lbs. Solid!

The 31' Sonic has a rounded "keel", as it's an old Donzi bottom that Jay Ross used for the design. It's a great boat, but not as well behaved in rough water as the Scarab or Active Thunder. The Sonic cabin is hard to beat in this size boat.
The Scarab, of course, is a production boat and in theory is not constructed to the standards of a hand laid-up boat like a Sonic or AT.
Not to throw another brand into the equation, but recently I was quite impressed with the ride and feel of the 33' Baja.
I don't think you can make a mistake with any of the brands you're contemplating.
Good Luck...and don't forget to get it surveyed!

One of my friends has a 02 33 avs that runs 80-81 with 496s. It rides alot better than my 35 Fountain did.
