The ones with the macerator and holding tanks are supposed to be emptied at pump out stations. So as to not pollute the local waters. But Im willing to bet most get slowly emptied while the boats are underway.

Most places around us offer free pump out as a courtesy to help keep the waters clean. Pump out is way to go. Can also shop vac out or use one of those shaker siphon hoses to empty into home septic.

Pumpouts in MD are funded by the state. They provide and install the pumpout systems to the marina and just have the marina operate them. Usually free or a $5 fee. They know if they let marina's charge for it, their gonna end up with a lot of baby ruths in the bay.
