Because carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, people need to learn to recognize the symptoms of CO poisoning while awake. Lethargy, headache, fatigue, etc.
Where you are really vulnerable is while asleep. It will NOT wake you up like fumes from fiberglass or wood burning. It just puts you into a deeper sleep where you will never wake up.
The tennis pro Vitas Gerulaitas died in his sleep from a faulty furnace dampner several years ago during the winter up North.
CO is produced from the combustion of any carbon-based fuel. Even diesel exhaust is a hazard.

There was a Hotel accident just last year in KEY WEST where people died from fumes in the A/C system :(

A really good idea is to have two CO detectors that run off of DIFFERENT power sources, like 110V and 12V. If the power goes off to the 110V at least the 12V system will still be working.

I don't think you could get CO poisoning from a diesel generator, unless perhaps if it had faulty injection. Diesels run too lean. The particulates (soot) emitted may kill you later with lung cancer however.
