Dear Power Boat Owners,

We would like to introduce ourselves and tell you about some changes for the 19th Annual Lake Rescue Shootout presented by Budweiser on August 24-26, 2007.

First of all, the Shootout will be televised on the SPEED Channel as part of the “LUCAS Oil on the Edge” Series. www.lucasoil.com. We will be filming a half hour show highlighting the fastest boats in the world to be aired later in the year.

We are also announcing 3 Primary Classes. Top Gun, Top Cat, and Top Vee. Top Gun is for all boats that run over 190 mph, Top Cat and Top Vee are for boats that can not reach 190, but still want to be on the television show. All three classes will have their own victory lane celebration at Shooter’s 21 after the event. Plus there will be scheduled times of the day for Top Gun, Cat and Vee only on Saturday at 12:00noon and 4:00pm, and the televised portion of the race will be from 3-5 on Sunday, with the victory celebration at 6:00pm.

We also have a new website with on-line registration. Visit www.lakeshootout.com. The cost to enter is still $50 for all runs, but all Top Gun/Cat/Vee Runners MUST rent a dock slip from Shooter’s 21 for $1000. We must do this so that the television crew can do interviews, etc. right after the driver’s finish their runs. Please register early so that we can reserve your slip. Call Jeff if you have any questions about registration or the dock slip.

Finally, we will be offering in-boat camera’s for the show at $2500/piece. We only have 5 camera’s so you will want to reserve your’s early. This is a great way to get your sponsors some TV time. Call Mike for more details.

For those of you that don’t know, the Lake Rescue Shootout is the largest unsanctioned boat race in the United States and has been listed by Powerboat Magazine as one of the 8 boating events that you must see. Basically, it is a one mile drag with a radar gun at the other end, and the biggest top speed is the winner. Last year over 30,000 people came to watch Dave Callan and John Cosker reach 208 MPH.

Something does not seem quite right here with forcing people to pay for slips so the TV station can interview them. Its like telling John Force he has to rent space in the pits.

IMO, these guys are the ones attracting the big audiances and they should have reserved slips at no cost to them.

Agreed, most teams are already spending 5-10k to make an appearance, sticking them with a 1k slip is BS. Thats 45 days worth of slip fees in Newport CA.

Yeah, I can see paying to reserve a slip for the day. What I can't see is mandating it if you are competing in a certain class with the purpose being "so you can be interviewed and so the TV station can show off your boat"

Shootout

For those of you that have not attended the race before, the cost has always been $50 to enter, and $500/day if you want to rent a slip at shooter's so there is nothing new. You would likely pay similar costs if you tried to reserve a slip at similar docks across the lake, although the costs might not be as high. However, when trying to film a show, there must be some sacrafices. I have been involved in professsional auto racing most of my life, and with TV comes exposure, but you also have to work on their schedule. If we set up cameras and a crew at Shooter's to film post run interviews, highlight some of the boats, and film the victory celebration, it would be very difficult to do that if all the "Top Gun, Cat, Vee" boats went to different Marinas. How would the show look if we were not able to interview Callan Marine or Budweiser Select after their run? Jeff and I are doing everything we can to incorporate a successful televsion plan without harming the integrity of this event which has gone on unchanged for 19 years. We did not raise entry fees or anything, and the water is still open for all the other classes that compete each year. We are just trying to make a better show for the fans and for TV. As regards to the John Force comment, NHRA does charge them for the space he "rents" in the pits, which is included in the entry fee. Also, there are many marinas all over the lake, which is not like a race track, so John Force does not have the choice to go to another pit area after his run.

I think this year will be the best ever, and we are doing everything we can to capture the excitement for the fans on the water, on the docks, and at home, but more importanty we want to maintain the spirit of this event, which is a "run what you brung" race to see who has the fastest boat on the lake.
