You will love a 35 fountain. They run fast, and quite well in rough lake water. Look at 353 formulas too. Same length, but a lot more boat. Weight, size, depth, and running surface. All of your options should have stock merc power if resale/service are your missions.......dont by a boat based on resale. It isnt an investment, and you will probably lose money. HAVE FUN ON IT!

I'm not knocking the 35 fountain, its a real nice boat. But a new guy should know that if you put the 35 fountain next to something like the 32 active thunder, the thunder is gonna be an all around bigger boat.

Its like shoes. Sometimes a size 12 of one brand is smaller than an 11.5 of another.

By the way, 525's would be more preferable. But also a lot more $$$.

The 496's can be warrantied for several years I believe and many insurance companies set their coverage limit at these engines (425hp).

525's are pretty brute but only come with a 1 year warranty, after that, it's all you and they will require a little more maintenance. (especially in salt water)Their running on 87 octane used to be an advantage, but new 496's run on 87 now as well. I think their fuel consumption is about the same as well.

If you can support and insure a pair of 525's, then I say go for them. I believe that the boat's value should hold better with those motors vs 496's, but don't quote me on that. There is a noticable price difference between the two though.

twin 525's vs. twin 496's in similiar 35' fountains for example, how would the 525's act differently than the 496's? Noticeable or not? If so, how so? thanks again for your help before i go see a local dealer.

The 525's will be stronger all around. Faster acceleration, better cruising speed, and probably an extra 7 or 8 mph on top end. Definately noticable...

496's in my 35 Lightning, good performer. 525's in the same boat, faster performer in terms of acceleration and top end.

I went with 496's for reasons stated above. Cheaper to buy, run, insure and I have 5 year warranties on the motors. A price delta of about $30K on a new boat compared to the 525's. That buys a lot of gas.

To say they act differently is an understatement. Fire up a 496 at the ramp and people will think it's pretty cool. Fire up a 525.........well listen for yourself to my single at idle....

I am in the same position as UThustler. I am in the market for my first offshore boat. I was mainly looking for a 38, but may go down to a 35 fountain. There are a couple that i have found with 496's, but i have not found any with 525's. Or at least in my price range (100k). Really want a a/c also.

What is the cruise and top speed of a 35' fountain or other brand with 496's vs 525's.

One thing for sure, my insurance co will not insure over 900hp. At 900 hp, a 100k boat would cost 1500/yr full coverage.
I heard of others paying over double with 500 efi.

I have warranties for 525's currently under factory program.... can you say 4 more years?? And, yes, direct from Merc, not aftermarket.
