#5 Drives...
Can someone point me to a thread that will discuss Mercruiser #5 drives or could someone comment on the reliablity of these...
Just doing research before I go bother Scott & Ruben this weekend... Thank you in advance |
750 Ft Lbs TQ/750 HP. Shorter than a 3A by about 5" but able to be spaced down up to 3''. The lowers have male splined long shafts and the uppers have long female splines to allow the lowwer to be dropped up to 3'' and still have enough spline engagement. Check the cutaway parts dwgs at the BAM website.

Uses 26 spline big shaft props.
Oh yeah, and shares plugin trans tailstock with other SSMs but not TRS. Like any other drive, dependability will depend on power in front of it and how it's used, or abused. Gary |
iF YOUR over 700hp, large boat running at loto go with the mercury 6.Its not going to break, the 5 was a good drive in the day, and is still good under 700hp, tough on resell also

My 50 Nortech has 5's with 850's and has never had a drive fail.

I have been putting 900+ to them for over 100 hours in a 10,100# package and absolutely no problems to date. Six is definetly a stronger set-up, and a slower set up as well. I guess Merc quit building #V assemblies two years ago? I would hope parts should be available for a few years to come?

We race the hell out of them with over 900 foot lbs. for the past three years. Normal maintenance every year keeps them healthy.

RmpRam has a 38cig with a pair of 1100's and used 5's without issues.
