Default Dragon Wins Belgium Grand Prix Day 1

First place on day one of the Belgian Grand Prix P-1 Super Sport Class goes to ExtremeBoat (formerly ARPRO). At present, they are the overall champs in that class. Congrats to Jackie and Mike.

Seems that Lucas Oils-Outerlimits ran out of gas in Belgium on the final lap when they were leading the race:

From the article below, directly from the Powerboat P1 website, it looks to me like Reggie and company kicked butt again, King of Shaves is 42ft Fountain.

P1 Fuelled with Drama as King of Shaves Wins in Belgium!

King of Shaves took its fourth victory of the season in dramatic style to extend its championship lead in Evolution, as Lucas Oils- Outerlimits, the race leader ran out of fuel on the final lap. It was a bitter blow for the American Outerlimits team who knew that their championship ambitions depended upon a victory and for most of the race that looked exactly what would happen.

This was round 9 of the 12 round world championship and the intensity of the racing and the emotions that followed would have left no one in any doubt that the season is into its final stages and the stakes, particularly for those teams in contention for the world title, could not be higher. As predicted, the conditions contributed to a high attrition rate and only two boats completed the course with OSG second despite suffering a broken hull. The Way to Happiness finished third, the first points finish of the season for this popular Italian team. Points and a podium must surely be the way to happiness!

The main protagonists in Evolution, King of Shaves, OSG and Lucas Oils - Outerlimits made a storming start with all three reaching the first buoy together. OSG, the reigning world champions, piloted by Giancarlo Cangiano and Giovanni Carpitella knew that to improve their title challenge they would need to finish ahead of championship leaders, King of Shaves. The same could be said of Lucas Oils and both boats set the early pace, OSG taking the lead. Behind them, King of Shaves was settling into an early rhythm and by the end of the first lap throttleman Craig Wilson and driver James Sheppard had superbly taken the Ilmor-powered Fountain into the lead with Lucas Oils - Outerlimits piloted by Joe Sgro and Nigel Hook closely following. It was 'nip and tuck' all the way and once the Italian OSG boat backed off a two-boat battle ensued.

It was a fascinating race between these two arch rivals in which the lead changed hands four times before the half way point when Lucas Oils-Outerlimits started to take control. Then drama! As the American boat entered the home straight for the final lap it suddenly slowed as the fuel ran out, King of Shaves re-took the lead with OSG in pursuit.

The win extends King of Shaves championship lead to 140 points from OSG. Whilst the gap is now comfortable it is not unassailable but with just three races remaining, another dramatic twist is required, something not uncommon in this exciting lifestyle sport.

For the Belgian entry, Limmi Offshore, it was not the dream home race as technical problems forced the team to retire on lap 3.
