Formula 292 versus 312 Fastech
Folks....looking for some advice. Formula replaced the 312 with a 292. I am looking at a used 312 but were there many advances made that make the 292 a better bet? TKS.

Besides for the ovious of the length difference, the 312 is a single step hull, and the 292 is a twin step
The 312 comes with twin Big Blocks, and the 292 comes with twin SB's. Cockpits are about the same size. Cabin on the 312 is bigger. My understanding has always been that unless the 312 has 454 mags or 502 mags, thats it is "slow" Either one is going to be a great boat. Formula doesn't build the fastest boat, but they build boats that last. |
Formula didn't replace the 312 with the 292, they made both for a few years. I had a 312 with 502's and a friend had a 292 with 6.2's. The cabin difference is huge if that's important to you. The 292 twin step is more effecient and was almost as fast as mine. Do NOT get the 312 with the 454 MPI's, it will be a low 60 mph boat. The mags (454 ot 502) will do well. Mine did 72-73 GPS or 77-78 on the dream-O-meter.

The 292 bottom would definatly have more technology built into it.

Ok, got the engine and speed part ...... what is the difference between a single step and double step hull aside from the obvious. Is the cabin really that much larger just for 2 feet? Thanks.

At some point, Formula stopped using wood in it's construction. It would be nice to buy a Formula new enough to have no wood in it.

The SAF, (Spousal Approval Factor) counts high in the cabin area. The Fridge and extra room gets many points. I have heard that wood stringers etc. can rot out so am not too happy if wood is in the 312. I dont mind it for interior parts just not structural. What about double stepped hull versus single? Is there a big difference? Thanks for the feedback....it helps alot.

All 312's have the fiberglass grid system.
