Fuel Consumption: Merc 496HO vs. Merc 525

Anyone know the tech info on this? Wondering how much difference there is at various RPMs.

Thanks!

YUP.....My guess would be he has the 525 but who know...we have seen about a 8% difference between the two the HO being the better economically.

There is a pic of a 525 in his avatar, so if I were a betting man, and I am :D , I'd say the 525 is 15% more thirsty on a 288 Sunsation.

The real sticking point comes it hull effeciency. If you only compare fuel flow at X rpm the results are skewed. For instance my boat wallows by comparison at 3000 but at 3200 it feels loose and wants to run. This of course depends on tab setting. One power package may look very economical at 3000 and another not so good. But how many RPM do I need to turn to get to the speed the hull free's up if I am running a lesser motor with smaller pitch prop?

100hp more than a 496HO at 15% more fuel consumption sounds reasonable to me.

If fuel consumption is a concern, this is definetely the wrong sport for you. I still say gas is the cheapest thing I ever put in a boat. :(
