Aluminum Offshore Boats - Research

James mentioned the weight difference between the old aluminum and the new composite cats. FYI, the first Superboat, Popeye's 4 engine 50 footer aluminum, weighed 8010 pounds bare with fuel cells and nothing else. I think a new 50' Skater in the same trim would weigh 4000 pounds.
BIG difference!

Brownie knows his stuff - If I rememeber correctly the 42" CUV with Arneson 8's, SC engines, little or no fuel was weiging in at 12,800 lbs - My 1996 382 Formula is a similar weight - A 42 MTI today adds weight to make 10,000 lbs - If you are going racing the tin can is not the right direction - If you want something that is a head turner with a couple of SC 900's then you can get the tin to go 120 mph - Also in the day the aluminum boats were made for "Ocean Racing" - same baot today can be lightened a lot because the type of racing has changed - I used to compare the tin boat to a 747, light weight and safe - now the airbus 380 is mostly composite so the arguement does not work -

I've got a pile of CUV photos on my computer... Mostly all the V hull boats. Compiled from Black Tornado, Patrick Caldente and Tim B-C mostly, and some internet searches. Such cool boats. I watched the Malta P1 race last night and kept wishing Thuraya was there to show those potato chips how it's done in the big water!
Here's a couple photos I like.
